Trick or treatment - a book by Edzard Ernst.

Last year UK complementary medicine expert Dr Edzard Ernst presented a thorough study on the effectiveness of reflexology. What did the report of the book ‘Trick of Treatment‘ report?

Reflexology: ‘bodywork on your hands & feet!

Reflexology was described in the study as a technique that involves applying pressure to various parts of the foot or hands, which is said to have a beneficial effect on other parts of the body.

Ernst searched six databases and found 217 trials on reflexology, of which only 18 randomised controlled trials were considered good enough to be analysed. Of these 18 trials, only five yielded positive results, says Ernst.

Ernst describes:

“Most of the higher-quality trials did not generate positive findings. The best evidence available to date does not demonstrate convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition.”

Ernst says proponents of reflexology argue the method is risk free but he argues it could be “life-threatening” if patients relied on it to treat a serious condition.

“There is little doubt that a foot massage is pleasantly relaxing, however specific medical claims should always be supported by sound evidence.”

Reflexology at Popsugar:

Some Western doctors believe that reflexology is nothing more than a relaxing foot massage, but it’s a widespread practice across Asia, and much of Chinese Medicine (such as acupuncture and acupressure) is based on these ‘lines of energy’, in the body.

Reflexology is a holistic treatment, which takes the view that the feet – and hands– work as maps of the body’s state of health and wellbeing. Reflexology practitioners divide the feet into zones that run from the toes, to the brain, through different parts of the body. There are ten vertical zones, or energy lines – and as pressure is provided to the feet, these lines are stimulated so that the energy is able to flow. For what to expect from a reflexology treatment, just read more.LEARN MORE ABOUT REFLEXOLOGY:

Taipei – About 1 000 Taiwanese will sit down for a foot massage in Taipei on Tuesday to set a Guinness World Record, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau said on Monday.

The 1 000 participants, including foreign visitors, will receive 40 minutes’ of foot massage, or reflexology massage, from 1 000 masseurs at the Taipei Arena Tuesday afternoon.

The event will be held by the Tourism Bureau and four Taiwan reflexology associations.

If things go as planned, Taiwan will set a second Guinness World Record – the largest game of head, shoulders, knees and toes.
The current record for this is 448 people, but the participants and masseurs in the Taipei arena will total 2 000, so they are expected to set a new world record. – Sapa-dpa.

Miss Malaysia Angelreena Lim knows how to relax:

I love a good foot and body massage. I recently visited a massage parlour in Hartamas, which offers good foot reflexology at a reasonable price. I usually crave massages when my feet are too tired due to too much walking and Latin dancing. It really helps me relax.

KUALA Lumpur has been Angelreena Lim’s home for most of her life. The girl with a sweet smile moved from her birthplace of Kedah to the city 17 years ago. Just last week, the 21-year-old Psychology student had a thrilling experience representing Kedah at the Miss Malaysia Universe 2008 beauty pageant.

“Even though the schedule was packed with challenging activities and it was my first time participating in beauty pageant, I had a rewarding experience with the girls, organisers and during the trip on Star Cruise.
“I also won three subsidiary titles. It was totally unexpected and I am grateful to be blessed with this opportunity,” Lim said.
She was named Miss Star Cruise Amity, Miss Celebrity Fitness Hot Bod and Miss BMI and Beauty Mart at the end of the 10-day competition.
Now back in Kuala Lumpur and in the midst of exams, she says that the city has so much to offer and young adults who plan to live here just need to be themselves and follow their instincts.

What do you like about KL?

The thing that I like about KL is its upbeat atmosphere, interesting places, the people and food. It gives a variety of choices and you’ll never find yourself being bored here.

What do you dislike about KL?

Traffic jams! That’s the only major setback. But I guess most great cities face the same problem.

What is your favourite food?

I would say my favourite food would be the fish head noodle served at SS20, Damansara Kim. It is the corner food stall, which has a pleasant and shady environment. It’s best to complete the meal with their yummy cendol!

What’s your favourite hang out in KL?

That has to be Laundry Bar in The Curve. I love the food, music and carefree atmosphere there.
